Okun monarchs seek political solution to Dino, Isa feud

Traditional rulers from Okunland in Kogi have appealed for unconditional release of the detained Administrator of Ijumu Local Government, Mr Taufiq Isa to allow for amicable resolution of alleged feud between him and Sen. Dino Melaye.

The traditional rulers led by the Acting Chairman of the Okunland Traditional Council, the Olubunu of Bunu land, Oba Adewale Ikusemoro made the appeal on Sunday in Lokoja at a press conference.

He said Dino and Isa are their sons and they have summoned them for a peaceful resolution of the crisis. The Police had on April 29 in Abuja paraded Isa and five other suspects for allegedly being behind the April 15 gun attack on Melaye at his residence at Ayetoro-Gbede in Ijumu Local Government.

Ikusemoro who was flanked by other leading traditional rulers from Okunland warned that if the crisis was not carefully handled it might engulf the whole of Okunland. He said that they had also met with the state Governor, Yahaya Bello, to ask for his support on the peaceful resolution of the crisis.

Also speaking at the press conference, a group of political office holders from Okunland led by the Majority Leader of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Mathew Kolawole said that they stand in solidarity with Isa in his travail.
They implored the police not to hold Isa further but charge him for opportunity to defend himself in court. Also at the briefing, the Kogi Integrity Group led by Mr Dare Michael said the police should have concluded investigations into the alleged crime before parading Isa and the others.
The Secretary to the State Government, Dr Folasade Ayoade, the Commissioners for education, Mr Joseph Tolorunleke, Finance, Mr Idris Asiwaju, and other political appointees from Okunland were at the briefing.

Oba Akiolu vs Oba Ogunwusi: My candid views! By Femi SHODUNKE

NIGERIA: DEAR respected Nigerians, particularly those of Yoruba ancestral root, how many of you have seen the video trending now on the Facebook and Whatsapp over the “scornful” behaviour of Oba of Lagos Rilwan Akiolu to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi?

IN the video, Oba Akiolu, a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, shunned (or disgraced) Oba Ogunwusi, who bowed in deference (a sign of respect to an elderly person) to the Oba Lagos to greet him at a public function in Lagos where there were many traditional rulers in attendance.  This happened after Ooni had greeted and was embraced by the Obi of Onitsha, who sat beside Oba Akiolu.

A quick look at the video will, no doubt, give the impression that the action of Oba Akiolu was deliberate, probably due to factor(s) only known to him.

HOWEVER, you’ll recall that recently (March 28, 2017), I initiated a post, on my Facebook wall, titled “Oba Rilwan Akiolu: Kabiyesi Beware!”  In the post, I advised the Kabiyesi on his utterances.  Oba Akiolu had said then that there’s no vacancy at Alausa in 2019.  The implication of that statement is that the current first term Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, would automatically run for second term, even two years before the race would commence.  Do you still recall Oba Akiolu’s rancorous statement before the 2015 election in which he was alleged to have told the Ibos in Lagos to jump into the lagoon if they would not support Ambode, the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, to win the governorship election?

WHILE I’ll wait for the defence of Oba Akiolu on his “rude” action to Oba Ogunwusi, but from antecedents, based on my personal experience over the years, I can say without hesitation (though I may be wrong) that the Lagos monarch acted deliberately.

WHY?

OBA Akiolu is too impetuous.   I’ve seen him display uncomplimentary attitudes at a public function.  In 2005, at the 90thbirthday thanksgiving service of the late Alake of Egbaland, Oba Oyebade Lipede, at St. Peter Cathedral, Ake, Abeokuta, the Oba of Lagos shunned the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuawade.  Oba Akiolu, who got to the church late and was in angry look, refused to greet Ooni.   But funnily enough, he exchanged pleasantry with Oba Lipede who sat close to Ooni Sijuwade.

I wish my eyes can play out what I saw that day between Ooni Sijuade and Oba Akiolu.

THERE was another ugly incident that day involving Oba Akiolu when he elbowed Otunba Kunle Ojora almost pushing him down in the church while going to the altar for Oba Lipede’s blessing by the Bishop of Egba Diocese.  Indeed, it was Olori ‘Bimpe Lipede that came to the rescue of Chief Ojora.  I was the ONLY newspaper journalist that saw it and reported that angle in my medium, The Comet newspaper, the edition which I still have in my library till today.  I wish I can scan and
I wrote:  “The 80th birthday church service of the Alake of……was nearly marred yesterday when Oba Akiolu elbowed….”

FUNNY enough my report caused uproar that during a discussion on it at the Island Club in Lagos my cousin called in the NIGHT to alert me on the anger of Oba Akiolu and some club members.  He even joked that I shouldn’t visit Lagos because I’ve been declared “wanted.”

HISTORICALLY, less than a year after the incident I was with an Egba Prince to visit Oba Akiolu in his palace, the first in my life inside Iga Idunganran.
WITHOUT knowing that I was the writer of the Ake scenario Oba Akiolu made reference to it.  He expressed bitterness on the publication and justified his action against Chief Ojora (his account is still fresh in my memory with him making reference to the late Prince Ademola Adeniji-Adele).

I didn’t disclose I was the journalist and without him knowing, I recorded ALL his conversations with us that day on tape (which I hide under my cloth): how a newspaper reported him with his picture on the front page during the ascension to the throne of Oba Adeyinka (or so), which made him determined to become Oba of Lagos, life in the police, etc. Indeed, he was a good historian by his account that day despite been a University of Lagos graduate of Law.

DEFINITELY, from the above I can say that the action of Oba Akiolu to Ooni Ogunwusi could be deliberate, probably to the “Ooni stool” (not to the person of the King) due to his frequent impetuous behaviors.

OR could Oba Akiolu be looking at Ooni Ogunwusi’s age, as a “boy” he could be his father?  But, if so, Ooni’s stool goes beyond age.  At least, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is now 80 years and six years senior to Oba of Lagos, prostrated for Ooni Ogunwusi when he visited his palace shortly after his installation.   So, what is the big deal in respecting culture?  At least, some others who are senior to Oba Akiolu still bow and prostrate for him due to his exalted throne.

WITHOUT doubt, Oba Akiolu must stand up for Governor Ambode at a public function, despite the fact that less than 10 years ago when Ambode was a Permanent Secretary in Lagos State, he must have prostrated to greet the King whenever he visited his palace. But today, will the same Ambode prostrate for Oba Akiolu?

ABOVE all, Oba Akiolu needs to watch his behaviours before he would become public embarrassment not only to himself, but the good people of Eko, his admirers, Yoruba race and indeed Nigeria.

MY appeal is that fellow traditional rulers should wade into the unbecoming attitude of Oba Akiolu (to counsel him appropriately) to prevent him from being attacked by overzealous followers of Ooni, disgraced or become public opprobrium in the eyes of those who should not only always respect but honour him.

Court reinstate Monarch in Imo State

An Owerri High Court, on Wednesday reinstated Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, the traditional ruler of Obinugwu autonomous community in Orlu Local Government Area, who was deposed by Imo Government.

The court also declared that the purported withdrawal of Ilomuanya’s certificate of recognition and staff of office by Gov. Rochas Okorocha on June 6, 2014 was illegal, unconstitutional, null and void.

Eze Ilomuanya had won nine legal cases against the Imo State Government.
Justice Theresa Chikeka, in his ruling, frowned at the governor’s conduct in claiming that he had dethroned the monarch via a press release signed by the then Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Anwukah. Anwukah is the current Minister of State (Education).

The judge said that the government breached Law N0.6 of 2006 and violated various court judgments, restraining the governor or his assignees from doing anything that would truncate Ilomuanya’s tenure as Chairman of Imo Traditional Rulers ‘Council.

Such release by the Secretary to the State Government was not a lawful instrument of authority and therefore null and void as it violates the express provisions of Law No. 6 of 2006, the court maintained.

She noted that the defence put up by Okorocha’s counsel, Chief Eddy Onyema, was alien to Nigeria’s rules. The court noted that in spite issuing an order on June 4, 2014, ordering that parties allow pending appeal at the Supreme Court, the governor and his attorney general, two days later, violated the said directive.

The actions of the governor contravened Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution. Similarly, Sections 13 and 14 (1) of Law No. 6 of 2006 provide conditions precedent in Section 14 (1) (a-h), before the governor can exercise his powers.

It was wrong for the governor to have acted as he did when the Court of Appeal judgment of July 5, 2013 was still subsisting. The entire objections of the governor are misconceptions of Law, Chikeka maintained.

Reacting to the judgment, Mr Miletus Nlemedum, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, said the state would appeal the judgment.
According to the commissioner, this is a miscarriage of justice and we will appeal the ruling.

Relocation of popular Computer Village in Ikeja sacrosanct – LASG

The Lagos State Government has concluded plans to relocate the popular Computer Village from Ikeja, before the end of 2017.
The state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Wasiu Anifowose, said on Tuesday that
the relocation would reduce gridlock.
Anifowose spoke at the 2017 Ministerial Press Briefing at Alausa in Ikeja.
The commissioner noted that the market was situated in a residential area – Otigba Street – saying that it would be moved to the ICT Park, Katangowa in Agbado/Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area.
“If at the end of this administration, the Computer Village is not moved from that Otigba Street in Ikeja to Katangua, I will not come here next year.
“It is a done deal; we have held a stakeholders’ meeting with the traders and they agreed to the relocation plan.
“It is an 11-year project that different administrations attempted to undertake but the present governor is a go getter.
“The relocation will deliver a world class computer and allied activities park. The process leading to the commencement of the development is in the concluding phase,’’ he said.
The official also said that massive construction was ongoing in Imota – the permanent site of the Mile 12 Market in Ketu – to relocate the market.
“If you go to Imota, you will be amazed at the level of work done,” he added.
On demolitions, he said that the state government had begun paying compensation to those whose houses were consumed by government projects and right of way recovery.
“The state government pays billions of naira for compensation,” he said.
Anifowose called on the media to join in the campaign for proper regulation of the environment.
He said that the state government had increased the ministry’s staff strength by 376 professionals to ensure an improved environment. (NAN)

Malaria Day: Ondo govt. to distribute 3m treated mosquito nets

Ondo State Government said it has concluded arrangement to begin house-to-house distribution of about three million insecticide treated mosquito nets.
Dr Taye Oni, the Permanent Secretary of Ondo State Ministry of Health, made this known while speaking with newsmen on World Malaria Day on Tuesday in Akure.
He said the state in partnership with Catholic Relief Services was about to take delivery of about three million insecticide treated nets, which would be distributed from house-to-house for free.
Oni said similar exercise took place last in 2012, saying that the nets would have lost their potency if not distributed in time.
He noted that the focus for this year’s celebration was prevention, adding that the Government and the World Health Organisation were working on closing the prevention gap.
Also speaking, Dr Waheed Afolayan, the state Epidemiologist and Programme Officer for Malaria, said the reduction in the prevalence of malaria largely depend on the use of insecticide treated mosquito nets and clean environment.

He, therefore, encouraged the people of the state to improve on its use and intensify efforts in environmental sanitation.( NAN)

Traditional rulers must expose criminals in the area - CP Lagos

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Fatai Owoseni, has warned traditional rulers in Ikorodu area against harbouring criminals who were unleashing terror on their subjects.

Owoseni gave the warning on Sunday during an interactive meeting with traditional rulers in Ikorodu over the incessant violent crimes by suspected militants in the area.

The police boss expressed sadness over incessant kidnapping, pipeline vandalism, robbery, cultism and killings of innocent persons in the area. Owoseni told the royal fathers that the police would no longer tolerate people being killed and maimed under the watchful eyes of traditional rulers.

He urged the traditional rulers to join hands with the police so that hoodlums would have no place to hide or operate in their domains. Owoseni accused some chiefs in the area of collaborating with criminals to unleash terror on residents.

There are Baales (village heads) that are informants and sponsors of criminals in this area. They allowed militants to build houses harbouring criminals in the creeks. I want the royal fathers to call their chiefs to order.

This meeting is convened to tell them that we will no longer tolerate silent conspiracy. Traditional rulers cannot tell me they don’t know who is who in their domain; all communities are advised to organise their local vigilantes, Owoseni said.

According to him, most kidnappings, killings and other violent crimes in Lagos State takes place in Ikorodu area and urged community to be part of the security management. In the community, there are hunters and farmers; they can’t say they don’t know criminals in their communities.

There is conspiracy of silence on criminal activities and this conspiracy must stop.
Traditional rulers and religious leaders must unmask the criminals in their communities.

Sanchez fires Arsenal to 20th FA Cup final

Alexis Sanchez scored an extra-time goal as Arsenal beat Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley to reach their 20th FA Cup final on Sunday.
The Naijaroyaltyculture.blogspot.com reports that this victory means it will be Arsenal’s third FA Cup final appearance in four seasons.
City, who lost David Silva to a first-half injury, went ahead in the 62nd minute when Sergio Aguero raced through the opponents’ defence to score.
Nacho Monreal volleyed in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross to equalise in the 72nd minute, though Yaya Toure hit the bar for City before extra time.
Sanchez then swept in when City failed to clear Mesut Ozil’s free-kick after 101 minutes.
Guardiola made his fourth substitution of the match throwing in Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho in a desperate tactical move in the 106th minute.
He replaced Raheem Sterling who came in earlier in the first half for the injured Silva.
However, the attacking force of Manchester City failed to break down a resolute Arsenal defence.
Iheanacho squirted a header wide under pressure in one of the last goal scoring chances of the match.
Arsenal manger Arsene Wenger in his post-match said it was a great team performance.
I am very proud of our performance and spirit. I felt we became stronger. In the first half maybe we were a bit cautious, accepting to be dominated, and then we became stronger and stronger.
It was a very tight game, but overall I think we deserve to win the game.
We went through a difficult period. I will talk one day about that. I feel players showed great togetherness today.
I am very pleased, it was a big game today. Overall it was a great performance not only technically but mentally. We became stronger and in the end deserved to win the game.
The team performance was there..When the players give their best and are completely focused you always stand up for them.
We were close to scoring and on the break they are very good. We lost the ball and conceded the goal but we showed the right response.”
Asked about his future, Wenger said: “People can question my decision but not my loyalty and commitment to the club.”
Also, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said: “In games like this, you can’t expect to control all the situations but we did most of the time.
We performed like we would want to in a final match. We did absolutely everything. Congratulations to Arsenal.
We’ll improve next season. We competed here, we had more chances but the finishing was like it has been throughout the season.
We played like we wanted to and that’s all. We are sad but tomorrow we have to stand up to finish the games we still have to play.
I don’t have regrets about the team. We just have to compete in these games. We are here for the results. Next season we will be stronger.”
Arsenal will face Chelsea in the final match at Wembley on May 27.

Owhe Festival: Its preparation & Celebration

Owhe clan is in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.  The clan is one of the seventeen clans that make up the Local Government Area in Isoko.
Preparation For The Festival

Owhe clan has nine prominent gods:- Aghaluwe, Oworu, Ovo, Otor, Orietor, Oturohogbo, Gbator, Ogbelueh and Oyise-Owhe, in which Owhe is the senior of the nine gods.

The Oyise Owhe festival is so honoured so much that elaborate preparation is usually carried out before it is celebrated.  The festival takes place once in every three years and last for one week.  When it is getting to the time of the celebration the “Oyise gods” which serves as the symbol of unity, peace and progress appears to people in various ways.

A day is normally fixed by the Odion who performs the duties of the Prime Minister at the Ogbodu quarter of Akiewhe, for the clearing of Edheide (groove).  The traditional road Oyise (Owhe gods) passes to visit his children.

The clearing starts in the morning from the quarter of Ovo followed by Uruogbe and Uthatho.  During the process of clearing, there are chanting of war songs and dancing.  Cutlasses are thrown to the air and caught up by their owners.

The clearing of Edheide is a day that the people try themselves if the gods of Owhe is still in active existence, because she is a goddess of war.  After clearing, the three quarters will have to meet at the shrine where the Oletu Okpikoko will lead the troop to the Oletu Olegbo Palace.  That day cutlasses and swords are used in reckless abandon, to gain entrance to the Oletu-Ologbo compound.

At this state if any person is able to enter the compound and kill the Oletu Ologbo, such a killer becomes the new Oletu Ologbo because the Oletu Ologbo is supposed to be the strongest warrior to lead the people to war in times of crises.

But today this battle is just a mock battle to show what used to be in practice in ancient times. After clearing of Edheide, the Oletu have to meet and fix a date for the celebration of the Oyise-Owhe festival.

Celebration Day
The Oyise Owhe festival is celebrated April of every four years.  The last celebration was done in 1999.  The Oyise Owhe festival is performed by all villages that make up Owhe Clan.  The festival involves much artistic decoration.

It is a Seven day business.

The first day, all the quarters move to Otor-Owhe with singing and dancing.  This day is usually the most colourful day during the celebration period.  The day of celebration is usually ‘Uje’ (a day after the market day).  It is a day full of various activities from morning to night.

Owhelogbo (formally called Ihuelogbo) procession arrives first at the shrine followed by Otor-Owhe.  They move in large numbers in decent dresses with their elephant tusks being blown by their followers, singing and dancing wonderfully.  The priestess who carries the “Ekpeti” (the god’s box) follows the processions as they dance towards the groove where the god lives.

Uthatho which is Akiewhe the youngest of the children arrive last. As soon as Akiewhe, the youngest son arrives with the procession, the service begins.  The climax of the festival starts as soon as the Chief Priest arrives at the arena with volumes of enthusiastic cheers and jubilation from the priest and priestesses and the entire spectators.

The three structures representing the three quarters of Owhe are carried down to the groove surrounding the shrine building from the various quarters.  These gods’ boxes are carried by the “Izere” (Priestess of the gods) well dressed in “Ibosu” (white wrapper). The first one to arrive at the groove is the “Ekpeti Owhe” (Owhe gods box) followed by Owhelogbo and lastly “Ivri” which is the most interesting aspect of the festival.

After the arrival of the three structures, the Chief Priest performs rituals on the offering as people present them.

It is at this stage that men and women show their riches through gorgeous dressing everyday for seven days.  During this time, different cultural dances feature for the period of seven days.

Culled from Delta Heritage.

African Drums Festival commences in Abeokuta

The African Drums Festival commenced in Abeokuta, Ogun, on Thursday with  more than  20 cultural troupes from about 13 countries from the continent in attendance.
The festival,  which is an expanded form of the maiden edition of the Nigerian Drums Festival held in Abeokuta in 2016, also drew participants from Haiti and observers from Dallas in the United States.
The Minister of Information.  Culture and Tourism, Alhaji  Lai Mohammed,  in his remarks described the festival as “a development worthy of emulation by other states.’’
He noted that such festival would further invigorate the strides of the government in tourism investment and development.
The Muhammadu Buhari -led administration is determined to pursue with relentless vigour the diversification of our present mono reliance on an oil economy to massive investment in non-oil sectors   like agriculture, solid minerals and tourism.,” he said.
Mohammed,  who was represented by the Artistic Director of the National Troupe of Nigeria, Mr Tar Ukor, noted that such festivals would promote pan-African unity and increased inter – African economic trade as  well as enhanced local value chain benefits.
This festival will also promote inter-African leisure travel and the renaissance  of our African cultural milestones in contributing toward  civilisation.
It will engender cultural reawakening in Africa on shared values and fraternal solidarity within the region,’’ he said.
Gov. Ibikunle Amosun  said the festival was a platform to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the people of Ogun and to also stamp Nigeria on the world map.
He gave an assurance that the state would continue to explore different aspects of the Nigerian culture with a view to promoting and preserving them.
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, urged states to focus on other aspects of the Nigerian culture with a view to propagating them.
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, noted that drums occupy  an important place in   Yoruba culture.
Drums are used to wake Yoruba monarchs early in the morning reminding them of their oaths to adjudicate among their subjects without fear or favour.
Drums are important tools that accompany monarchs and warriors to the warfront and act as source from which they draw encouragement and courage as well as indicate to them when to withdraw or advance into  battle.
Drums are also used to announce the deaths of some important personalities in Yorubaland,” he said.
Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, said  rhythms  from drums “are enchanting.’’
He described as erroneous the belief that culture involves  some demonic and satanic practices.

Soyinka,  who commended the Ogun government for the initiative,  noted that many great things in Nigeria began from Ogun.

Olubadan accuses deposed Oloode of using mercenaries

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has alerted the Oyo State Police Command of moves by some individuals to misuse the law enforcement agents in the manner that could cause the breakdown of law and order.
The Olubadan made the accusation at his palace in Ibadan while receiving the new Deputy Inspector General of Police, South West, DIG Foluso Adebanjo.
Adetunji specifically mentioned the case of Oloode village in Oluyole Local Government where one Lukman Alao was deposed as Baale and promptly replaced on Jan. 9 with Baale Dauda Odeyemi.
According to the first class monarch, “ Alao has become a law unto himself using mercenaries procured outside Oyo State to molest and arrest law abiding citizens.
Part of his mode of operation is continuous use of number plate of Baale Oloode long after his removal from office.
His co-traveller is the Onido of Ido, Chief Tajudeen Akinola, who, although is not molesting anybody is using the plate number of Onido of Ido.
If a chief is removed in accordance with our tradition over allegations of wrong doing, he could either take it or go to the law court in search of justice.
We believe in the rule of law. This is why we have not joined issues with the deposed Baale.
Adetunji said that as the traditional authority over all the eleven local government councils in Ibadanland, he will be indifferent to people using mercenaries to molest his people.
He commended officers and men of the Nigerian Police for their professionalism in maintaining law and order and ensuring peace and security.
The monarch prayed for the success of the new DIG and his men, including the AIG Zone 1 the Oyo State Police Commissioner and others.
Th new DIG, South West,  Adebanjo told Kabiyesi that his request would be promptly looked into.

He said officers and men of the NPF would continue to collaborate with traditional institutions to ensure law and order. (NAN)
