Thailand’s former tourism chief was sentenced to 50 years in
jail on Wednesday for taking bribes worth 1.74 million
dollars from a pair of Hollywood producers, an official at the Bangkok criminal
court said.
Juthamas Siriwan, a former governor of the Tourism Authority of
Thailand (TAT), and her daughter, Jittasopa Siriwan, were found guilty of
taking bribes from Gerald and Patricia Green from 2002 to 2007.
Former Hollywood producers were found to have transferred money
into Jittasopa’s bank account in order to win a bid to run the Bangkok Film
Festival in 2003.
Juthamas, 70, was given a maximum sentence of 50 years, and her
daughter was sentenced to 44 years.
The Greens were arrested by the U.S. Department of Justice in
2007 for conspiracy and money laundering.
In 2010, they were sentenced to six months in prison and ordered
to pay restitution of 250,000 dollars, according to Hollywood Reporter.
Thailand’s National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) on Friday ordered the seizure of assets from
Juthamas and Jittasopa worth a total of 1.88 million dollars.
Both are currently detained at a female prison in Bangkok
pending an appeal and a bail request.
