Last year when it was tagged the ‘Nigerian Drum Festival’ but today because of the huge patronage that was witnessed at the median edition last year the Ogun State government has take it a step further and tagged the event this year as the ‘AFRICAN DRUMS FESTIVAL’.
In the words of the Secretary
to the Ogun State government Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa who gave the opening
remarks as he also doubles as the chairman of the Local Organizing committee of
the festival.
His words; ‘the growth and
importance of the drums festival as a melting point for cultural fraternity necessitated
the need to yield to the demand to scale up its scope beyond the geographical
location called Nigeria, to now include the African continent.
African drums unlike others
are more traditional, cultural and in many instances spiritual with each
describing an origin and speaking a language. African drums are natural in form
and not synthetic.
The legion of commendations
and acknowledgements showered on the first edition held between April 19-22,
2016; were as a result of the cultural renaissance it created on the African
continent; particularly with the unveiling of the world tallest drums (17 and
18 metres) during the event.
It is worthy to note that,
the drums festival being packaged as an avenue to enhance the economic value of
its citizenry by showcasing talents and the cultural heriage. He further said ‘we
are astonished by the level of confirmation by over twenty (20) cultural
troupes from within Nigeria and across Africa.
When asked how much this
festival was going to cost the government; Bar. Taiwo Adeoluwa said most the
work done by the committee is by direct labour and the government was riding on
goodwill from partners but when pressured to state specific amount been
budgeted for the festival he reluctantly answered saying ‘about fifty million
Naira has been approved by the State governor for the festival.
The festival logo was
unveiled by the deputy governor of the state Her Excellency Chief (Mrs) Yetunde
Onanuga who represented the governor.
